The doormat test: what the postie and your bank see

Pick a shop and a way to pay, and we'll print the parcel label and the statement line someone else would see.

Two people might find out what you ordered: whoever picks the parcel up off the mat, and whoever can see your bank app. So pick a shop and a way to pay, and we'll print what each of them would see.

App banks such as Monzo and Starling may look up the merchant and show the brand, whatever the statement name says.

Every line above comes from the shop's own delivery, payment and help pages. Where a shop doesn't say, we print a blank rather than guess. A blank isn't a red flag; it just means you can't plan around it.

Reading the label

Every shop we list says it sends orders in plain packaging. The bit that varies is the return address, the one line of text on the outside that isn't yours. Barnaby LTD or Gold Group House tells a nosy neighbour nothing at all. "Not stated" means the shop hasn't said what the label carries.

Reading the statement

Card payments go through under a company name, which is fine on a paper statement. App banks are the wrinkle: they look the merchant up and may show the brand, sometimes with a logo. Ann Summers says this out loud about Monzo and Starling; assume it could happen with any shop.

PayPal swaps one trace for another. Your bank shows a PayPal line, but PayPal's own activity page and emails name the shop. Klarna puts the shop, and often what you bought, into another app that sends you reminders.

The short version

  • Most private: a card the other person can't see, delivered somewhere only you collect from.
  • Shared account? Pick a shop with a neutral billing name, and remember app banks may show the brand anyway.
  • Shared inbox? PayPal and Klarna receipts are the giveaway, not the parcel.

The full table for every shop lives in our packaging and billing names guide, and the payment methods are compared in paying with PayPal, Klarna or a card.
