How to choose couples sex toys

Same room or apart, hands-free or not, which bodies are involved: match the kind of toy to the sex you already have.

The best couples sex toy is one that fits the sex you already have, not a new routine you'll try once. Tell the matcher how you do things and it'll show which kinds of toy fit, and why the rest don't.

Start with what you already do

If most of your sex is penetrative, look at toys worn during it: couples vibrators and vibrating cock rings. If it's mostly hands and mouths, a bullet or a wand slots straight in. Toys that ask you to change everything tend to end up in a drawer.

Hands-free changes everything

The most useful thing a couples toy can do is stay put. Wearables, couples vibrators, rings, plugs and strap-ons all leave your hands free for each other.

Who's got what

We describe every toy by the body it's for, never by gender. "Couples" means any two (or more) people: a vulva and a penis, two vulvas, two penises, and everything between. A strap-on means penetration for any body, whoever's wearing it.

When you're apart

Long-distance toys connect through an app over the internet, so one of you can run the other's toy from anywhere; Bluetooth-only toys can't. Our long-distance and app toys guide covers what to check.

Noise, privacy and sharing

  • Wands are the loudest; small bullets and wearables are usually the quietest.
  • Toys that go inside two bodies need washing in between, or a fresh condom.
  • App toys mean an app on your phone: check what it collects before you pair it.
