Ann Summers review

Ann Summers has been selling sex toys and lingerie in the UK since the early seventies, and most people have walked past one of its shops. Buying online takes the walk-past out of it, and the shop has put real thought into what turns up on your doorstep.

The packaging promise is specific, which we like. Smaller orders come in a plain, brown padded envelope and bigger ones in a plain box, with no Ann Summers branding, logos or markings inside or out. The only labels are the courier's and any legally required ones, such as a battery-safety sticker. If you send something back, the returns label is addressed to Gold Group House rather than Ann Summers.

On your bank statement, most banks show AS Ltd. The shop is upfront that some app banks, Monzo and Starling among them, can display the full Ann Summers name, because that's down to the bank's own display settings. If you share an account view with someone, that's worth knowing before you pay.

Standard delivery is £3.99, or free over £50, and takes up to three working days. Express costs £5.95 and aims for the next working day if you order before 7pm. There's also free Click & Collect from its stores in three to five working days. Returns on eligible items are free within 28 days, which is more generous than most UK sex shops. As everywhere, a toy with a broken seal only comes back if it's faulty.
